Liverpool stayed within three points of leaders Manchester United after defeating Newcastle United 3-0 at Anfield.

The Reds opened the scoring in the 22nd minute as Dirk Kuyt intercepted the ball inside the Newcastle area and drilled a cross which Yossi Benayoun, maybe an inch or two offside, turned in with his knee.

More dreadful defending led to the second goal six minutes later when no one prevented Kuyt from meeting a Steven Gerrard’s corner and scoring with a diving header.

It could have been worse for the Magpies when Xabi Alonso saw a dipping 30-yarder bounce down off the bar with Steve Harper beaten on 39 minutes.

Newcastle was left with 10 men after Joey Barton - making his first appearance since January 28 - received a straight red-card for a two-footed lunge on Alonso which left the Reds midfielder needing to be stretchered off the field.

Alonso was eventually replaced by Lucas Leiva, and the substitute added Liverpool's third as he nodded Fábio Aurélio’s free-kick past Harper in the 87th minute.
