Chelsea are ready to make Ashley Cole the world's highest-paid left-back by offering him a £27 million four-year deal, according to a report in The Sun.

Spanish giants Barcelona are said to be interested in the England international and are apparently ready to offer £20 million to acquire his services.

However, newly appointed Chelsea manager Carlo Ancelotti is eager to hold on to the left-back and will offer him £130,000-a-week wages to bring the former Arsenal star into line with the likes of Frank Lampard, John Terry and Michael Ballack as the club’s top earners.

"One of the first things Mr Ancelotti said when arriving at the club was not to allow Ashley to leave," a Chelsea source said.

"He is aware that Barcelona rate him extremely highly and Pep Guardiola sees the left-back position as the team’s only weak link.

"We’re extremely hopeful that Ashley will stay at Chelsea."
