World Cup qualifier: Argentina stumbled again

Table of Contents
Argentina's bid to qualify for the 2010 World Cup took a blow after suffering a 2-0 defeat to Ecuador in Quito.

The Albiceleste need to finish in the top four for an automatic passage to South Africa next year, but they are now just two points clear of Ecuador.

Argentina had a chance to put in front after Carlos Tévez was fouled inside the area by keeper Marcelo Elizaga in the 28th minute. Tévez stepped up to the penalty spot, but his weak effort was saved by Elizaga, who was born in Argentina.

The hosts broke the deadlock on 71 minutes when Walter Ayoví fired a spectacular long-range missile that beat goalkeeper Mariano Andújar.

Substitute Pablo Palacios increased the lead seven minutes from time as he took advantage of a lapse of concentration in the Argentina defence with a well-placed shot.

Lineups:

Ecuador: Elizaga; Reasco, Hurtado, Espinoza, Ayoví; Castillo, Valencia, Noboa (Palacios 45), Méndez; Caicedo (Guerrón 79),Tenorio (Montero 13)
