World Cup qualifier: Netherlands qualify for World Cup

The Netherlands became the first European country to qualify for the 2010 World Cup following a 2-1 away win in Iceland.

Midfielder Nigel de Jong opened the scoring for the Dutch after nine minutes, heading home Rafael van der Vaart's cross for his first ever international goal.

Mark van Bommel doubled the lead seven minutes later when he drilled a low right-footed shot into the bottom right corner.

The home side scored a consolation through Kristján Örn Sigurðsson two minutes from time.

The win lifted the Oranje onto 18 points from six games, a yawning 11 points clear of second-placed Scotland.
