Felipe Melo defends his Juventus move

Sunday, July 19, 2009

Felipe Melo has declared he did not move to Juventus simply for financial reasons, insisting the €25 million switch was purely down to his buyout clause being met.

The Brazilian midfielder is the latest Fiorentina player to join fiercest rivals Juve.

The Viola supporters did not take the decision well and unveiled banners insulting the 25-year-old.

"I am not a mercenary, I am a professional," Melo told Globoesporte. "Fiorentina put a buy-out clause in my contract and Juve paid it.

"The Viola did well out of it too, as they had only paid €8 million for me a year ago. Juve is also without doubt a good opportunity for me.

"I am certain that the majority of fans will appreciate me for what I did last year.

"But if they jeer me the way they did Roberto Baggio and Giorgio Chiellini, then I will just focus on being even more concentrated."
