Karim Benzema: Why I chose Real Madrid

Sunday, July 5, 2009

Karim Benzema has revealed that he had the opportunity to join a host of European giants, but decided instead to move to Real Madrid.

The 21-year-old is set to join Kaká and Cristiano Ronaldo in signing a six-year contract at the Bernabéu after a fee of €35 million has been agreed between Olympique Lyon and the big-spending Spanish giants.

And Benzema has now confirmed he turned down the chance to play for many of Europe's top clubs before deciding to move to Madrid.

He said: "When I started to play football I had a lot of dreams. The first was to become a professional footballer. The second to play for the French team. The third was to wear the Real Madrid shirt.

"Indeed, I could have joined Manchester United, Barcelona, Inter Milan or AC Milan, but Real are unique. Everyone is dreaming to play at Real.

"I really wanted to stay at Lyon until the next World Cup. The opportunity to play with stars like Kaká, Cristiano Ronaldo and so many great players, made me change my mind."
