The 31-year-old had been under contract with Real Madrid until next year, but management at the Bernabéu recently made it clear that following this summer's multi-million euro recruitment campaign he was surplus to requirements.

"I experienced some fantastic years of football at Real," Heinze told www.om.net.

"But a player's life is made up of changes of club and I'm happy to be here and will give my best."

Marseille coach Didier Deschamps added: "He is a true defender who loves the fight, is tough and has technical qualities.

"He isn't just a destroyer - he hasn't got more than 50 caps by chance. He has experience. He has no fear.

"His experience at big European clubs, in his international team, in European competitions means he knows pressure."

Deschamps has been active in the transfer market in his first season as coach as he bids to challenge defending champion Bordeaux and Olympique Lyon.

On Tuesday, former Spain striker Fernando Morientes, who was a free agent after leaving Valencia this summer, joined the Mediterranean side along with Lorient winger Fabrice Abriel.

The other players to have made the switch to the Vélodrome in the close season are Lucho González, Stéphane M'Bia, Souleymane Diawara, Édouard Cissé, Cyril Rool, Elinton Andrade and Charley Fomen.
