Alberto Aquilani set to join Liverpool from Roma

Thursday, August 6, 2009

While Xabi Alonso was completing his medical and signing a four-year contract with Real Madrid, Liverpool were agreeing a fee for AS Roma star Alberto Aquilani.

The price is believed to be in the region of £20 million and subject to a medical examination being completed later this week.

Liverpool agreed a deal for Aquilani, who only signed a new four-year deal with Roma in May, within hours of Alonso passing the medical which sealed his £30 million switch to Los Merengues.

Reds boss Rafa Benítez identified Aquilani as Alonso's replacement as soon as Real's interest was known.

"Alberto is a very good player and I'm delighted we've reached agreement with Roma for his transfer," Benítez told the club's official website.

"He will travel to Merseyside later this week for a medical. Alberto has a winning mentality and great experience in both Serie A and the Champions League.

"He has long been recognised as a top class talent in Italy, captaining his country at both Under 19 and Under 21 levels before establishing himself in the senior national side."
