The 28-year-old striker arrived at the Riverside in January 2008 from Heerenveen for a club record of £12.7 million but he could not save Middlesbrough from dropping into the Championship, scoring just four times in 31 Premier League games last term.

Alves had been expected to leave Boro this summer after he went AWOL and missed the start of pre-season training.

His departure though is a relief to Boro as he earned in the region of £50,000 a week on Teesside, making him the club's highest earner.

Alves is the fourth big-name departure from the Riverside this season, following the sales of Stewart Downing, Tuncay Şanlı and Robert Huth.
