La Liga: Atlético Madrid 4-1 Valencia

Tuesday, March 2, 2010

Atlético Madrid are now 11th in La Liga and 10 points clear of the drop zone after a 4-1 win against nine-man Valencia in an incident-packed match at the Vicente Calderón.

The visitors took the lead in the 20th minute when David Silva dribbled round goalkeeper David de Gea before carefully placing his shot.

Valencia captain Carlos Marchena was then sent off for a second yellow card on the half-hour mark and Diego Forlán equalised from the resulting penalty.

Sergio Agüero gave Atlético the lead with a header from a Simão corner in the 78th minute before Valencia suffered another huge blow when Miguel was shown a straight red card for his challenge on Juan Valera.

Atlético hammered home their two-man advantage in the closing stages with more goals from Forlán and José Manuel Jurado to inflict only a fourth defeat of the season on Valencia.
