Fernando Torres grabbed a brace as Liverpool swept Premier League's basement boys Portsmouth aside 4-1 at Anfield.

The Reds broke the deadlock on 26 minutes as stand-in Pompey keeper Jamie Ashdown drilled Ricardo Rocha's back-pass straight at Steven Gerrard and the ball dropped to Maxi Rodríguez, who squared for Torres to roll a shot into the empty net.

Two minutes later, it was effectively game over as Glen Johnson's cross to the far post dropped to Torres, who rolled the ball across for Ryan Babel to toe-poke his shot into the bottom corner.

In the 32nd minute, it was 3-0 when Alberto Aquilani ran on to Torres' backheel to drill his left-foot shot in at the near post.

Torres netted his second after 77 minutes as Liverpool peppered Ashdown's goal before Nadir Belhadj bagged a late consolation the visitors scarcely deserved.
