Gonzalo Higuaín extends Real Madrid stay

Saturday, June 5, 2010

Real Madrid striker Gonzalo Higuaín has signed a new contract extension that would keep him at the Bernabéu until 2016.

Despite being the club's top goalscorer in La Liga for the past two seasons, rumours were rife that Real were set to cash in on the 22-year-old following a bust-up with team-mate Cristiano Ronaldo.

Arsenal and Manchester City were rumoured to be lining up big-money bids but Higuaín has opted to extend his stay at the Spanish capital.

And that means he can now focus solely on Argentina and the World Cup.

Higuaín told the press: "I'm the happiest man in the world with my renewal. To continue at the best club in the world is what I wanted, I couldn't be happier.

"Obviously I'm calmer now. Now I'm focused 100 per cent on Argentina and thank God I don't have to worry about anything else.

"I'm at a World Cup, I play in the best team in the world — everything is perfect. Now I need to help my national team."
