Man United starlet Macheda loaned to Sampdoria

Tuesday, January 4, 2011

Federico Macheda has been allowed out on loan to Sampdoria during the second half of the season to get regular first team experience after only being a fringe figure at Manchester United.

The 19-year-old striker had been wanted by several clubs, including Premier League side West Bromwich Albion and former club Lazio, but has plumped for a switch to Sampdoria.

The Blucheriati have been in need of a striker since Antonio Cassano's controversial departure for AC Milan following a row with club president Riccardo Garrone.

"It's the first time that I'll be measuring myself in Serie A. Here you play a very tactical kind of football, but I have no fear," Macheda told La Gazzetta dello Sport.

"I know that there is a lot of expectation around me, but the responsibility doesn't frighten me. If you don't play, you don't grow and I want to do that in a hurry.

"I'll work to the maximum."

Asked why he chose Sampdoria over Lazio, Macheda replied: "Sampdoria were the club who really tried to take me. There was never anything concrete with Lazio.

"I need to play with continuity and I consider this to be the best decision, but no one has guaranteed me a place. I will have to earn it.

"There was too much competition at Manchester United. Sir Alex Ferguson is a maestro, the best coach in the world and I am sorry to leave him, even for a short period, but he also encouraged me to take this new experience.

"I will return to Manchester an even stronger player."
