The 32-year-old was visiting the White House along with the rest of the Red Devils squad as part of their pre-season tour of the US.

Ferdinand told his army of over 1million Twitter followers how much he was enjoying the tour before taking a picture posing in a "private room".

The excited defender then posted the snap on his social networking page, adding the trap-line: "Security needs beefing up here at the White House....!!"

Just seconds later the picture mysteriously vanished.

When he realized what had happened, Ferdinand wrote: "Whoa....some1 has got into my phone + taken down my pics off twitter....this is deep...is jack Bauer in Washington?!"

Other tweets soon followed: "What an experience having the opportunity to go into the White House, thank you.....now where are my pics????"

And then: "My pic of the security was #removed quick, rapido, sharpish, fast....they don't play here in DC...I feel like I'm on 24 right now #baffled"

Oddly, other photographs of Ferdinand in the state dining room and one of his team-mates eating cookies were allowed to remain online.

But the issue was still on his mind the following day, as he wrote: "Training just done in DC....feels kinda weird...feel like I'm being watched by some undercover jack Bauer type dudes...phone hacked into etc."
