Lionel Messi bagged a hat-trick as Barcelona claimed their biggest home win in La Liga since 1996 with an 8-0 rout of Osasuna at the Camp Nou.

The Argentina star opened the scoring after just five minutes before assisting Cesc Fàbregas to double the lead seven minutes later.

David Villa made it 3-0 in the 34th minute and then created Barcelona's fourth goal of the night five minutes before the break when his shot blocked by Osasauna goalkeeper Andrés Fernández, only to see it ricochet off Rovérsio.

Messi netted his second a minute later with another simple finish, giving the Catalans a commanding 5-0 lead at half-time.

Osasuna survived 11 minutes of the second period before Xavi got in on the scoring act, lifting the ball over the flatfooted Fernández who could only watch the ball land in his net.

With Osasuna demoralized, Fàbregas laid the ball off for Villa to get his second of the night on 76 minutes, and Messi then four minutes later completed his hat-trick, dribbling through the middle of the defense before finding the net.
