Manchester City moved back to the top of the Premier League on goal difference, with just two games remaining, after a 1-0 derby win over Manchester United at the Etihad Stadium.
This game had been hyped up as the most important ever played between the two sides and it was City who prevailed in an absorbing encounter which came close to boiling over at times.
The crucial moment arrived on the stroke of half-time as David Silva whipped in a corner from the right flank and Vincent Kompany got away from Chris Smalling to power his header past David de Gea.
And despite five minutes' stoppage time, United were not unable to find a trademark equaliser and City's fans erupted in celebration at the final whistle.
