Paulo Bento's men, who at fourth in the world are ranked 102 places higher than their opponents, fell behind on 13 minutes with a goal of stunning brilliance.

A raking cross field pass found da Mota down the left channel and the forward cut inside with one touch before rifling a superb 25-yard shot past Rui Patrício into the top corner of the Portuguese net.

Da Mota is of Portuguese parentage but he was born in Ettelbruck, Luxembourg.

Cristiano Ronaldo hauled his country onto level terms, slotting past the Luxembourg goalkeeper Jonathan Joubert on 28 minutes.

Another goal was always on the cards and Hélder Postiga struck what proved to be the winner in the 54th minute as Portugal got their World Cup qualifying campaign up and running.
