It was Diego Costa who got the ball rolling for the hosts with a goal after 23 minutes but from then on it was the Falcao show as the Colombian delivered a finishing masterclass that included a header, a volley and a penalty.

"This is an unforgettable evening, I did not expect to score as many goals," the 26-year-old reflected after the match.

"I must emphasise that this is because of the team's play."

With this impressive haul, Falcao becomes the second player in Atlético's history after Vava in 1958 to net five in a single league match.

"He always wants more and this is a historic day," added Atleti boss Diego Simeone.

"I do not know if someone will repeat five goals in a game for Atlético. When he has the chances then it is difficult for him to stop."
