Lampard, who made his Chelsea debut nearly 12 years ago, struck twice at Villa Park as the Blues fought back to grab 2-1 on Saturday and virtually ensure a place in the Champions League next season.

Christian Benteke opened the scoring for Paul Lambert's team in the 14th minute and the first half ended even worse for Chelsea when Ramires was sent off on the stroke of half-time.

Benteke was then sent off himself in the 58th minute, and it proved a major turning point as Lampard soon equalized before sealing the points - and the record - three minutes from time.

That left him with 203 career goals for the Blues, eclipsing the record held by striker Bobby Tambling who played for Chelsea between 1959 and 1970.

"It's right up there," Lampard, who has 607 appearances for Chelsea, told Sky Sports.

"Not much beats Munich (when Chelsea won the Champions League last season) because that was amazing for the team and the club, but personally it is another great day and I am really pleased.

"Bobby Tambling is a great man and I was pleased to level, but didn't want to overcook that celebration out of respect for him.

"But then to go and break it I was delighted and I am just very pleased to do it today."

As he often does, Lampard dedicated his goals to his mother, who died in 2008.

He said: "I have been here a long time, I lost my mum a few years ago and she was my biggest supporter, so it's for her."

The 34-year-old is out of contract at the end of the season and is yet to be offered a new deal by club owner Roman Abramovich.

Lampard added: "I hope to be here next year. We've got a huge week coming up and hopefully at the end of that week we can sit down and sort it out."
