The kit failed to arrive before the match started, but their hosts were able to help out by lending them their yellow away strip from last season to wear.
Therefore the match went ahead with Sheffield Wednesday in their home kit and Millwall in Sheffield Wednesday's old kit.
Millwall did somehow manage to get their alternate kits to the stadium for the start of the second half, but it was a little late to prevent the embarrassing situation.
"It's just an honest mistake, I think. These things happen. It just added to the madness of the game," Millwall manager Steve Lomas said afterwards.
Last season, Crystal Palace had to loan their away kits to Barnsley after the visitors brought the wrong-coloured shirts.
