Having already qualified for the knockout stages, Atlético coach Diego Simeone named a weakened squad for the match in Russia.

While Zenit enjoyed the lion's share of possession, Adrián put the visitors ahead on 53 minutes after a swift counter-attack.

However, the strike was cancelled out by a fluke goal in the 74th minute.

Igor Smolnikov's cross from the right flicked off the head of Toby Alderweireld and the ball looped, apparently harmlessly towards the goals.

Courtois moved towards it to tip the ball over, but he misjudged the flight of the ball as it dipped over the Belgian goalkeeper's head and dropped into the net.

"The goal starts with a ball that was going out and well," Simeone said at his post-match conference.

"It's football and is sometimes decided on these situations and errors."
