Goal of the day: Graziano Pellè (Southampton) vs Stoke

Thursday, October 30, 2014

Graziano Pellè struck a stunning opener en route to a 3-2 win at Stoke City as Southampton reached the Capital One Cup quarter-finals for the first time in 10 years.

Both teams headed into Wednesday's match with plenty of familiarity after Stoke fell to a 1-0 loss at St Mary's in the Premier League on Saturday.

A return to their home venue did not make much difference to Stoke early on as Pellè opened the scoring after just six minutes with a superb strike.

There seemed to be no immediate danger when Southampton left-back Matthew Targett drove forward and played a neat ball inside to Pellè.

But the Italian took full advantage of being afforded too much space when superbly curling a 25-yard effort beyond the reach of Asmir Begović.

The visitors appeared to be cruising when Shane Long added another later in the opening half, only for Steven N'Zonzi to pull one back just after the break.

Mame Biram Diouf levelled eight minutes from time with a close-range header, but substitute Peter Crouch was stupidly sent off and Pellè ended any hopes of a home victory with his second of the night.
