A viral video of Peruvian shamans casting a "curse" on the former Barcelona superstar before a World Cup qualifier in September 2023 has sparked fresh speculation: has Neymar really been cursed?
The incident occurred ahead of Brazil's match with Peru, when a group known as Tayta Inti (Father Sun) performed an eerie ritual.
The shamans were seen stabbing an effigy of Neymar, stamping on his image, and "tying his feet", claiming it would neutralise his performance and cause injury.
Shaman Felix Rondan stated confidently at the time:In Lima, the capital of Peru, a group of shamans seek to neutralize the Brazilian soccer player Neymar before the World Cup qualifying match. pic.twitter.com/h18N61db4y

We have neutralised Neymar by tying his feet. We tied him up so that he is not in good shape, and doesn't run and play well.Whilst Brazil won that match 1-0 and Neymar provided the winning assist, the real story started afterwards.
527 Days Injured Since the "Curse" Began
Since that fateful game, Neymar has missed 527 of the last 580 days due to a series of devastating injuries:
- October 2023: Ruptured ACL whilst playing for Brazil against Uruguay.
- October 2024: Returns from ACL tear, only to suffer a severe hamstring injury.
- January 2025: Contract terminated early by Al-Hilal after just seven matches and one goal.
Santos Return Ends in Tears - Literally
Returning to his boyhood club Santos in Brazil was meant to offer a fresh start.
Instead, the misery continued.
In April 2025, during his first Campeonato Brasileiro Série A start, Neymar limped off after just 34 minutes, clutching his thigh while wearing a special No 100 shirt to commemorate his 100th appearance at the Vila Belmiro stadium.
Curse or Coincidence?
Neymar is only 33 years old, but his career appears to be spiralling beyond repair.
Whether or not one believes in curses or the power of shamans, the numbers and events since that match in Peru paint a haunting picture.
His story has shifted from footballing genius to cautionary tale - one that began with a knife-wielding shaman and an eerie chant under South American skies.
