Why does the Newcastle United man only have nine fingers?
The answer has nothing to do with football.
The childhood accident that changed everything
Burn lost the ring finger on his right hand in a freak accident when he was just 13 years old.Speaking to Sky Sports, the 34-year-old explained that the injury happened whilst he was trying to impress a group of girls during an afternoon with friends.
I'd been out with some friends, and I was showing off in front of a group of girls. At first, Burn didn't realise how serious the injury was.
I think a rabbit had got out and got into a community centre. So, I jumped the fence, not knowing there was a gate around the corner, and I was wearing a ring.
It was a ring I was given off my grandad, so it was made of an old shilling, sort of solid. Then the spike got caught in the ring, and when I jumped off, it ripped me.
Only after pulling back his sleeve did he see the full extent of the damage. He was rushed to hospital, but doctors were unable to save the finger.
It never stopped his football career
Despite the traumatic accident, Burn never allowed it to derail his ambitions. The defender has gone on to make more than 550 senior appearances across his career, establishing himself as one of the Premier League's most reliable centre-backs before earning a place in England's World Cup squad.
His missing finger has never affected his performances on the pitch.
Instead, Burn has become known for his aerial dominance, leadership and composure, qualities that have made him an important option for England during the tournament.
From awkward moments to becoming a cult hero
Although the injury has had little impact on his football, Burn admits it has created some amusing situations in everyday life.He recalled one memorable problem from the early days of dating his girlfriend.
I remember when I first started going out with my girlfriend, we used to go to McDonald's. You go through the drive-thru, hand over your money and when they give the change back, I'd put my hand out - the coins would fall between the gap of the car and the window.Burn has also shown he is happy to joke about the missing finger.
I'd open the door but I couldn't get the money back, so I would just have to leave it and just drive off. So contactless payment was the best thing that ever happened to me.
During Newcastle's visit to adidas headquarters before the 2024/25 season, Burn tried on a goalkeeper glove alongside Harvey Barnes and Sean Longstaff. With one spare glove finger left empty, the trio burst into laughter as Burn playfully wiggled it around.
Burn shines at the 2026 World Cup
Burn has continued to make his mark on England's World Cup campaign despite largely being used from the bench. He made his tournament debut in the dramatic Round of 16 victory over Mexico, replacing Elliot Anderson with around 15 minutes remaining. England, reduced to 10 men, were forced to withstand relentless pressure before sealing a thrilling 3-2 victory.
Burn immediately made his presence felt, recording six clearances and two blocks to help preserve England's lead. His six clearances were the most by any substitute entering that late in a World Cup knockout match since substitutions were introduced in 1970.
The experienced defender was called upon again in the quarter-final against Norway, entering during extra time as England defended a narrow 2-1 advantage.
Although he spent only nine minutes on the pitch, Burn still produced three trademark headed clearances to help secure England's place in the semi-finals.
His calmness under pressure, commanding aerial ability and willingness to put his body on the line have quickly made him a fan favourite, proving that a childhood accident never stood in the way of achieving his football dream.
