Ecuadorian authorities seized 469 kilograms of cocaine from a truck near the Colombian border on Wednesday, with green rectangular packages bearing stickers featuring Haaland’s image.
Police also arrested a woman identified as MarÃa R., who was carrying Colombian identity documents.
The seizure took place near Guagua Negro, close to the border city of Tulcán, after anti-narcotics officers received an anonymous tip about a suspicious vehicle travelling along the Pan-American Highway.
A search of the truck uncovered 370 packages concealed inside a false bottom. Police later released footage showing the packages being removed from the hidden compartment, with Haaland's likeness clearly visible on the wrapping.
Why was Haaland's face on the cocaine?
Police have not explained why the traffickers chose Haaland's image. There is no indication that the footballer has any connection to the shipment or the criminal operation.Using celebrity names, images and other recognisable symbols on drug packages is, however, an established practice among trafficking networks. Such markings can reportedly be used to identify the group behind a shipment, distinguish different batches or indicate the intended recipient.
Haaland is not the first football star whose image has appeared on seized narcotics. Argentina captain Lionel Messi has also been featured on packages confiscated during previous drug seizures.

The timing of the bizarre discovery comes after Haaland enjoyed a prominent role at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, held across the United States, Mexico and Canada.The Norwegian striker scored seven goals in four matches, whilst his imposing physique, deadpan personality and often playful sense of humour helped make him one of the tournament's most recognisable figures online.
His popularity has also spawned a wave of memes and viral content, including the affectionate fan nicknames "pretty princess" and "babygirl."
None of that, of course, explains how his image ended up on hundreds of cocaine packages. The branding appears to have been used by traffickers rather than being connected to Haaland himself.
Ecuador's role in the cocaine trade
The seizure also highlights Ecuador's position as a major logistical hub for international drug trafficking.According to police, criminal groups in Ecuador work with Colombian and Mexican cartels to move narcotics through established trafficking routes. Authorities estimate that about 80% of the drugs entering these networks originate in Colombia, with the remainder coming from Peru.
The seized cocaine was estimated to be worth approximately US$842,000 on Ecuador’s domestic market. Its estimated value rises to more than US$11 million in the United States and over US$19.6 million in Europe.
Ecuadorian police reported seizing around 80 tonnes of drugs during the first half of 2026. Authorities seized nearly 215 tonnes in 2025 and almost 295 tonnes in 2024, with cocaine accounting for the majority of the seizures.
For Haaland, the incident is simply another bizarre example of how far his image has travelled since becoming one of football's biggest global stars.
His face may be appearing on countless screens and social-media posts, but its appearance on a cocaine shipment in Ecuador is one association the Norwegian forward is unlikely to have wanted.
