Fuller joins 'The Fight Club'

Tuesday, December 30, 2008

Stoke striker Ricardo Fuller has joined football's 'Hall of Shame' for fighting with a team-mate on the pitch.

The Jamaican forward was sent off on Sunday for slapping his own captain Andy Griffin during his side's 2-1 defeat against West Ham.

However, Fuller can console himself with the knowledge that he is not alone in taking his frustrations out on a team-mate, as the Premier League is quite used to seeing team-mates become sparring partners.

Here are some of the top spats:

Mike Flanagan v Derek Hales (Maidstone v Charlton - 1979)

Mike Flanagan v Derek HalesThe Charlton pair were sent off for coming to blows in a 1979 FA Cup tie against Maidstone. They went at it after an attack broke down five minutes from time.

Flanagan was exonerated, Hales sacked but later reinstated after an appeal. But the feud never died away as five years later, back at Charlton, Hales threatened to quit the club if they signed Flanagan again.

Steve McManaman v Bruce Grobbelaar (Everton v Liverpool - 1993)

In a Merseyside derby on 1993, Grobbelaar was enraged when a young McManaman hit a weak clarance from the goal side, giving him an earful of abuse.

But the goalkeeper is even less impressed when the young winger responded by shouting back just as loud - resulting in him having his throat grabbed and being pushed away.

Graeme Le Saux and David Batty (Spartak Moscow v Blackburn Rovers - 1995)

Graeme Le Saux and David BattyThe Blackburn team-mates had a spat during their side's Champions League clash at Spartak Moscow.

Batty was furious that Le Saux had taken the ball off him, mis-controlled it and subsequently given away a throw in to the opposition. He then confronted Le Saux who sent a left hook on him, breaking his hand in the process then hit out at Tim Sherwood, who stepped in to try to separate the pair.

Another heated row broke out later on, between Alan Shearer and Colin Hendry. And Blackburn lost 3-0 to complete a miserable night.

Kieron Dyer v Lee Bowyer (Newcastle v Aston Villa - 2005)

When at Newcastle, the duo famously clashed in front of a packed house at St James’ Park. The reason for this memorable fight is said to be down to Dyer not passing the ball to Bowyer.

A series of punches were exchanged before Villa skipper Gareth Barry intervened. Both players were sent-off as their team slumped to a dispiriting 3-0 to Villa.

They later appeared alongside manager Graeme Souness to say sorry for their behaviour. "We are teammates and we have disagreements, but we should not be fighting in front of 50,000 people," admitted Dyer. Bowyer was later fined by a court and his club also banned him.

Both players did not apologise to each other at the time but soon made up and are now team-mates at West Ham.

Emmanuel Adebayor and Niclas Bendtner (Tottenham v Arsenal - 2008)

Things were already not going well for Bendtner as his were losing 4-1 and about to be dumped out of the Carling Cup, with one of Spurs' goals was his header into his own net.

Then seven minutes from time his strike partner head butted him. Bendtner was left with a bloody nose and ref Howard Webb and skipper William Gallas had to separate the pair.
