Copa del Rey: Sevilla snatch first-leg win

Thursday, February 5, 2009

A late goal from Lautaro Acosta gave Sevilla the advantage over Athletic Bilbao as they came from behind to win 2-1 in the Copa Del Rey semi-final first leg at a drenched Ramón Sánchez Pizjuán.

The visitors took the lead after 43 minutes when Andrés Palop couldn't reach a corner from David López, and Fernando Llorente was there to head into the empty net.

Sevilla levelled the scoreline just after the hour mark when defensive midfielder Aldo Duscher took advantage of a scramble in the Bilbao penalty area to smash home a close range volley.

The hosts then completely dominated the remainder of the game and, four minutes later, Jesús Navas jinked his way down the right channel and crossed to Ndri Romaric, but his header was saved brilliantly by Gorka Iraizoz.

Sevilla were handed the chance to take the lead in controversial circumstances with just five minutes left as Frédéric Kanouté was adjudged to have been tripped by Javi Martínez in the box. Kanouté stepped up himself to take it but sent his spot-kick against the left-hand post.

However, in stoppage time, Sevilla found their winner as a deflected shot from Duscher found its way through to Acosta, and he tapped home under Gorka.
