Gerrard to make Madrid trip

Tuesday, February 24, 2009

Liverpool has been boosted by the news that skipper Steven Gerrard is fit to travel with Rafa Benítez's squad to Spain for their Champions League tie against Real Madrid on Wednesday.

Gerrard has been sidelined for almost three weeks with a hamstring injury that he suffered in the 1–0 FA Cup defeat at Everton earlier this month.

The England star was thought to have been close to featuring in the Premier League match with Manchester City on Sunday but Benítez decided he was not quite ready.

However, he took part in training at Melwood on Monday morning and after discussions between Benítez and the club's medical staff, he has been included in the travelling party for the game at the Bernabéu.

"Steven will be in the squad," Benítez told the club's official website. "He was okay in training this morning.

"It was a special training session so we were not testing him 100 percent, but he trained okay so we will see."

Meanwhile, the Reds will be without Daniel Agger as the Danish defender has not recovered in time to make the trip to the Spanish capital.

Benitez said: "Agger will not travel because of an injury to his back."
