Real register Diarra for Champions League

Tuesday, February 3, 2009

Real Madrid chose to register midfielder Lassana Diarra for the knockout stages of the Champions League, while Klaas-Jan Huntelaar will remain on the sidelines.

The Spanish giants spent €20 million on each during the January transfer window, but were forced to choose between the pair due to UEFA rules which state that only one player can be registered for the knockout stages who has represented another club in European competition.

Diarra and Huntelaar have both played in the UEFA Cup this season - for Portsmouth and Ajax respectively.

Despite the fact that Los Blancos have launched plenty of appeals to try and reverse the decision, they were not successful, and Huntelaar will not now play.

Diarra has been a key player in coach Juande Ramos' lineup since his move from Portsmouth, while Huntelaar is still looking for his first goal for Real.

Real also registered Julien Faubert, who joined the club on loan from West Ham this weekend, and youngster Ádám Szalai, Hungarian reserve team player, for the European competition.

The three additions replaced crocked Ruud van Nistelrooy, Mahamadou Diarra and Rubén de la Red.

The nine-time European champions plays Liverpool in the last 16, with the first leg at the Bernabéu on February 25, and the return at Anfield on March 10.
