AC Milan defender Alessandro Nesta could be forced to retire early, as he is to be operated on to try and resolve his recurring back trouble.

The 32-year-old was expected to make the squad in their derby clash with Inter Milan on Sunday, but it has now been revealed that he suffered a severe pain in his back that it prevents Nesta from sleeping at night without the aid of painkillers.

Channel4 reports that surgery will take place on Tuesday morning, and it is highly unlikely he will be able to feature this term and some sources suggest that his footballing career is at risk.

It is the third time in the last year Nesta has suffered a relapse and frequent trips to a specialist in Miami appear to have done little good.

Nesta has been dealing with this problem for years, but he has always turned down the possibility of an operation, because it is widely known that this kind of procedure could put an end to a footballer’s career.

The ex-Lazio captain has been sidelined since July 2008 and is yet to make a single official appearance the Rossoneri this season.
