Cesc Fàbregas in spitting row

Wednesday, March 18, 2009

Cesc Fàbregas has been accused of spitting at Hull assistant manager Brian Horton after Arsenal's controversial 2-1 FA Cup win at Emirates Stadium.

The Spanish playmaker was not in the Arsenal team as he continues his recovery from injury, but he made his way onto the pitch at the final whistle.

Hull boss Phil Brown claims the Spaniard became involved in an altercation with Horton at the end of the match.

"I was there and I witnessed it," Brown raged. "He spat at my assistant manager down the tunnel.

"That is their club captain, hopefully he is proud of himself. He spat at his feet."

This allegation, though, has been fiercely denied by Fàbregas.

He told The Sun: "I categorically deny that I spat at anybody after the match.

"It was not until half an hour after the game that I heard what Hull were saying about me and it is not something that is easy to accept.

"I have never done this in my whole career on the pitch, so why would I do it when I am not even playing?

"I understand Hull are angry and frustrated about going out of the FA Cup.

"But I don’t know why they are saying these things about me because it did not happen. That is the truth.

"I don’t even know who the assistant manager of Hull is or what he looks like.

"I am told Hull will be making an official complaint to the FA about me.

"Well, I am perfectly relaxed about that. I have nothing to hide. Not one drop of spit left my mouth. I am certain of that."

There were further claims that Gunners boss Arsène Wenger refused to shake Brown’s hand at the final whistle as tensions ran high on the sidelines between both benches for most of the match.

"Arsène never shakes my hand," Brown said. "It’s normally etiquette, maybe he was a bit sore at us beating them here last time."

But Wenger flatly denied any problem by saying: "When the game is finished I walk in and wait for the manager. He knows I will be there, he wasn’t so I went to the dressing room.

"I would shake his hand now — why not?"
