Christian Vieri considers playing poker professionally

Friday, April 17, 2009

Just weeks after terminating his contract with Atalanta, veteran striker Christian Vieri is set to compete in a European poker tour.

The 35-year-old is without a club having quit the Orobici this month, but he insists his passion for football has not faded away just yet.

"My future is still in football," he told Sportweek magazine. "I will stop playing when I am fed up of running behind a ball and I am not bored yet.

"When I'm retired, who knows, I could become a professional poker player."

Vieri is a big fan of Texas Hold'em Poker and just came back from Los Angeles, where he participated in two tournaments.

He will also attend the Pokerstars European Poker Tour in San Remo and Monte Carlo at the end of the month.

Boris Becker, Vikash Dhorasoo, Sébastien Chabal and Tomas Brolin are also believed to be taking part in the tournament.

"I have always played cards during training camps," Vieri added. "I used to play Italian card games, though. I rarely played poker.

"However, Texas Hold'em is just wonderful and it really gets you pumped up.

"We all begin as equals, with the same amount of chips and in what other game do you get to challenge champions from other sports?

"It gives you an incredible feeling. The adrenaline. It's necessary for whoever has played sport at the highest level. I enjoy myself a lot."
