Sir Ryan Giggs?

Tuesday, April 28, 2009

Two frontbench politicians threw their support behind a campaign to secure a knighthood for Manchester United midfielder Ryan Giggs.

Communities and Local Government Secretary, Hazel Blears, and Shadow Home Secretary, Chris Grayling, have lent their support to the 'Sir Ryan Giggs' campaign launched by unofficial United website MustBeRed.com – which was set up by ConservativeHome editor Tim Montgomerie.

As part of the internet petition, Mr Montgomerie has listed 11 reasons why Giggs should be given the honour, ranging from his footballing accomplishments to his charity work.

Giggs, who was named the PFA Player of the Year on Sunday, is already an OBE but never before has a player still playing received such an accolade.

"Ryan Giggs, as well as an outstanding record on the pitch, has a proud record of voluntary work off the pitch, including with young players in Salford," said Ms Blears, whose Salford constituency borders the northwestern English city of Manchester.

"He is a positive role model in so many ways that he deserves the recognition of a knighthood."

Mr Grayling, a self-confessed Red Devils fan, added: "Ryan Giggs is the outstanding British footballer of the last generation.

"His achievements deserve to be recognised with a knighthood."
