England international Steven Gerrard has scooped the PFA Fans' Player of the Year for 2009 following a superb season with Liverpool.

Gerrard missed out on the PFA Players' Player of the Year award, that was instead handed to Manchester United veteran Ryan Giggs.

But now the Anfield skipper, who has picked up three monthly awards this season, can now add the title of PFA Fans' Player of the Year 2009 to his ever-growing list of honours.

"This award proves that Steven is popular with football supporters all over the country, and it is easy to see why," PFA Chief Executive Gordon Taylor said.

"Consistently, he is one of the best English players in the game and it is a pleasure to know him, to watch him and to marvel at his performances and his continued loyalty and commitment to club and country.

"Steven has been a personal favourite of mine for a long time now and I have the utmost respect and admiration for the way he continues to go about his business, as an influential midfield player, a talisman if you like, for club and country.

"He is a real Roy of the Rovers performer who, on so many occasions when Liverpool have perhaps looked down and out, he has pulled them through virtually single-handed.

"I don’t think many people would argue with the comments made by Zinedine Zidane that Steve is the best midfield player in the world."
