World Cup qualifier: England thrash Andorra

Thursday, June 11, 2009

England took a seventh consecutive win in their World Cup qualifying campaign following a 6-0 win over Andorra at Wembley.

A victory over Croatia in the next qualifier on September 9th could be enough to ensure the Three Lions will reach next year's tournament in South Africa.

Wayne Rooney opened the scoring in the fourth minute as when he headed home Glen Johnson's cross from the right.

The home side were made to wait almost until the half hour before finding the net again with Frank Lampard finishing firmly from 12 yards.

Rooney collected his 24th goal for his country when he volleyed Johnson's cross into the back of the net in the 39th minute.

Johnson was again the architect on 73 minutes as he cleverly clipped the ball into the centre where substitute Jermain Defoe rose to nod home the fourth.

Defoe was on the scoresheet again two minutes later when he tapped in a rebound after David Beckham's free-kick was spilled by Andorra goalkeeper Koldo Álvarez.

Peter Crouch completed the scoring 10 minutes from time, poking home from close range after a woeful mistake from Álvarez.

Lineups:

England: Green; Johnson, Lescott, Terry, Cole (Bridge 63); Walcott, Beckham, Lampard, Gerrard (Young 46); Crouch, Rooney (Defoe 46)
