Angry Beckham confronts jeering Galaxy fans

Monday, July 20, 2009

David Beckham received an ugly reception at the Home Depot Center after returning from a loan spell with AC Milan - the team the LA Galaxy faced in a friendly that finished 2–2.

Throughout the first half of the game Beckham was jeered by a section of the crowd, who feel he has betrayed the club by joining Milan and then saying the standard of play was far higher in Italy than the United States.

After the referee blew for half-time, a heated Beckham tried to leap over an advertising boarding and appeared to make a "come on" gesture towards fans before allegedly swearing at a fan.

The former England captain was held back by security staff as an angry fan left his seat, jumped down on to the pitch and attempted to run towards the footballer.

At this point security intervened and escorted Beckham to the changing room, while removing the fan from the pitch.

Fans reacted with fury to Beckham's actions.

One supporter criticised the former Manchester United and Real Madrid star for being "unprofessional" and "stupid".

He said: "He went up there and said 'Come on mother-effer' and called the guy out.

"He called out a drunk fan. How stupid is that?

"He's the player, he's the professional. He should have kept himself under control and he didn't."

Beckham afterwards tried to play down the incident, saying to Sky Sports News: "Just towards the end of the first half there was a corner and a few of the guys were shouting some really not nice things.

"I just walked over at the whistle and said 'calm down' and tried to call one of them to shake my hand, he just started swearing...

"I tried to shake one of the guy's hands but he didn't want any of it. That's the way it is.

"(The boos are) to be expected. Sometimes it goes beyond it. The majority of the fans have been great."
