Russian soccer fans have been advised to drink Welsh whisky to ward off swine flu when they visit for a World Cup qualifier next month.

Hundreds of Russian fans are expected to travel to Cardiff for the Group Four qualifier on September 9.

Russia's top doctor advised the country's citizens to avoid traveling to Britain, but Alexander Shprygin, the head of the head of the Russian supporters' association, stating in Reuters: "Russian fans don't fear anything or anybody so this virus will not stand in our way of supporting our team."

He added: "We urge our fans to drink a lot of Welsh whisky as a form of disinfection.

"This should cure all symptoms of the disease."

Britain is the hardest hit country in Europe by the A(H1N1) virus with some 110,000 new cases last week of the virus.

By contrast, Russia has had just 55 cases confirmed since the pandemic began in April, and officials are keen to restrict any spread.
