Premier League: West Ham 1-2 Tottenham

Monday, August 24, 2009

Tottenham Hotspur returned to the top of the Premier League after defeating London rivals West Ham 2-1 at Upton Park.

The hosts went ahead in the 49th minute when Carlton Cole spun onto a Luis Jiménez knockdown and unleashed a left-foot thunderbolt that left goalkeeper Carlo Cudicini with no chance.

But then just five minutes later Cole turned provider for the opposition as his crazy back-pass fell straight to Jermain Defoe's feet, allowing the in-form striker to net his fourth league goal of the term.

Spurs winger Aaron Lennon captured all three points for Spurs when he dispossessed Jonathan Spector near the corner of the area and scored with a rare left-foot shot.
