Premier League: Wigan 3-1 Chelsea

Sunday, September 27, 2009

Chelsea lost their 100 percent start to the season following a 3-1 defeat to Wigan Athletic at the DW Stadium.

Titus Bramble headed the hosts in front after 16 minutes before Didier Drogba steered in the equaliser at the start of the second period.

The game took a dramatic turn a minute later when Petr Čech was given a straight red card for bringing down Hugo Rodallega as he charged through on goal.

Florent Malouda was sacrificed as Hilario came on to replace Čech in the Chelsea goal and his first job was to pick the ball out of the net with Rodallega converting his spot-kick.

Having used all their substitutions, Chelsea were reduced to nine men for the closing minutes when defender Ashley Cole was carried off on a stretcher injured.

And Wigan completed the scoring in stoppage time as Paul Scharner converted Maynor Figueroa's centre.
