Carlos Tévez told to improve his English

Saturday, October 31, 2009

Argentine striker Carlos Tévez has been told it is time he learned to speak English in order to help him improve his communication with his team-mates at Manchester City.

Many people were stunned at his press conference when he joined City he was still speaking in Spanish despite two seasons with Manchester United and a season at West Ham.

Pablo Zabaleta, Tévez's team-mate with City and Argentina, is virtually fluent after only 14 months in England and he admits that Tévez will benefit if he can improve his understanding of the language.

"It's important to speak the language," said Zabaleta. "I still go to English lessons once a week.

"I didn't speak English before I came here, I couldn't say anything. But I learned when I arrived it here.

"I've said to Carlos that he needs to come to me for lessons and he tries sometimes to speak English.

"It's important to to be able to speak English because we need to communicate with team-mates, the manager - everyone.

"We're living in England, certainly for the future, so it's important. I hope my English is getting better. I try, I try.

"But people are always happy with Carlos anyway, because he gives 100 per cent. He's playing really well and is a good player, so he's very important for us."
