Fabio Cannavaro fails doping test

Saturday, October 10, 2009

Italy captain Fabio Cannavaro has failed a doping test after receiving a cortisone-based anti-allergic medication to treat a wasp sting.

The Juventus defender was allegedly stung by a wasp and took a medicine that contained the banned substance, which is often used to suppress pain.

The Italian Olympic Committee (CONI) said the 36-year-old requested an exemption after being treated in hospital but his request was missing a document and while awaiting a decision he was subjected to an anti-doping test, which returned a positive result.

A statement on the organisation's website read: "After an Italian player made a request for an exemption for therapeutic reasons for medicine given in an emergency, CONI's Therapeutic Exemption Committee requested via registered letter that the Emergency Room doctor's certificate be added to the documentation sent.

"In the meantime, the athlete was subjected to an anti-doping test and the result was positive."

Juventus have responded quickly to the surprise news stating they will co-operate fully with the investigation.

"The Juventus medical staff worked in respect of the rules and acted with urgency in August following a deterioration in his condition due to an insect sting," read a statement from the Bianconeri.

"In such an occasion, the pharmacological treatment was necessary to prevent further complications, including lethal ones.

"The player and the Juventus medical staff will, as always, be at the full disposal of the authorities to clarify this matter as soon as possible, including any misunderstandings in the paperwork."
