Third-placed Sevilla saw their title hopes suffer a setback as they were held 1-1 by 10-man Valladolid.
The hosts fell behind after 33 minutes when Angola striker Manucho scored his second goal of the season with a diving header from Diego Costa's cross.
But Valladolid soon found themselves a man down after Borja received his marching orders for a cynical lunge on Diego Perotti.
Sevilla equalised on the stroke of half-time when Alberto Marcos brought Jesús Navas down in the area and Luís Fabiano converted.
