David Villa scored a 34th-minute penalty as third-placed Valencia picked up a 1-0 victory over Deportivo La Coruña at the Mestalla.
The kick was given when Vicente's shot from outside the box struck Zé Castro's hand, and Villa was not so wasteful on this occasion, coolly slotting into the corner with Depor goalkeeper Daniel Aranzubia going the other way.
Valencia finished the game with 10 men after substitute Rubén Baraja was sent off in injury-time, but it made no difference to the outcome of the game.
