World Cup 2010 Second Round: Germany 4-1 England

Sunday, June 27, 2010

Thomas Müller bagged a brace within three minutes for Germany to send sorry England out of the World Cup with a comfortabe 4-1 victory in Bloemfontein.

The Germans went ahead in the 20 minutes as Manuel Neuer's goal-kick flew over the head of John Terry and straight to Miroslav Klose, who outmuscled Matthew Upson before poking the ball past a helpless David James.

Klose again was involved in Germany's second 12 minutes later, flicking the ball from the touchline to the path of Müller who instead of shooting he squared the ball out left, where Lukas Podolski fired home from a tight angle.

England looked dead and buried, but hit back five minutes later when Upson headed home a Steven Gerrard cross as England took a short corner and caught Germany napping at the back.

Then less than 60 seconds later, Frank Lampard volleyed a shot over Neuer and off the bar into the goal, but the German keeper played on and Uruguayan referee Jorge Larrionda played on.

Television replays instantly showed Lampard's shot was at least a yard over the line and England had been denied a clear goal.

On 67 minutes, Müller restored Germany's two-goal lead as England were caught on the counter-attack. A Lampard free-kick was charged down and the Germans broke quickly before Müller drilled home Bastian Schweinsteiger's pass.

Just two minutes later and the game was well and truly put to bed as Mesut Özil outpaced Gareth Barry and rolled the ball across the area for Müller to fire home his second goal of the game.
