Champions League Group A: Tottenham 4-1 Twente

Thursday, September 30, 2010

Tottenham Hotspur picked up their first ever Champions League victory with a 4-1 win over FC Twente in an incident-filled match at White Hart Lane.

In a Group A match that yielded three spot-kicks, Rafael van der Vaart missed the first penalty in the opening period but he made amends by breaking the deadlock in the 47th minute.

Roman Pavlyuchenko then stepped up to put away a spot-kick just three minutes later, before substitute Nacer Chadli pulled one back for Twente in the 56th minute after Spurs' defence failed to deal with a free-kick.

But a frantic few minutes just after the hour mark saw van der Vaart saw red after picking up a second booking, as Pavlyuchenko then netted another penalty following a harsh handball before Gareth Bale completed the win with five minutes left.
