Bulgarian player scores fastest own goal ever in Europe

Wednesday, November 10, 2010

Levski Sofia defender Ivo Ivanov has scored the fastest own goal ever in European competition by putting the ball into his own net 14 seconds after coming on as a substitute.

Ivanov was introduced as an 87th minute substitute during their Europa League game against Lille presumably in the hope that he could shore up the defence to secure a 2-1 victory.

But the recently capped Bulgarian defender headed the ball into his own net with his first touch to level the scores at 2-2 just six minutes after Vladimir Gadzhev had put the home side ahead.

After the match, Ivanov told Reuters: "This is the worst moment of my life.

"I still don't have any explanation. I just wanted to clear the ball but I connected awkwardly with my head and it went in. It was so painful to see."
