Darren Bent marked his first appearance for Aston Villa with the winning goal to dent Manchester City's title hopes.
The striker, signed from Sunderland this week in a controversial big-money move, netted the only goal of the game on 18 minutes as he slotted the ball home from close range after Joe Hart had parried an Ashley Young effort.
