Ten-man Real Madrid moved to within five points of Barcelona at the top of La Liga after a 1-0 away victory over Espanyol.
The visitors played a man down from the second minute at the Cornellà-El Prat after goalkeeper Iker Casillas was shown a straight red card for a foul on José Callejón in a one-on-one situation with the goal wide open.
Even so, Real's quality was enough to overcome Espanyol's numerical advantage and Marcelo grabbed the winner midway through the first half when he drilled home from an acute angle.
