Nine-time winners Real Madrid began their Champions League campaign on a positive note with a 1-0 away win over Dinamo Zagreb in Group D.
Ángel di María scored the only goal of the game on 53 minutes when Cristiano Ronaldo, Karim Benzema and Marcelo combined to set up the Argentine winger to curl in from the right.
The hosts launched a late rally to find the equaliser after Marcelo was sent off on 73 minutes for a second bookable offense after diving, but they failed to breach the Madrid citadel.
