Liverpool opened the scoring afte just eight minutes on the clock when Jerome Thomas was adjudged to have fouled Luis Suárez inside the area and Adam made no mistake with the resulting penalty.
Carroll made it 2-0 in first-half stoppage-time, poking the ball past the advancing Ben Foster after being released by Suárez.
